Projects that shape and inspire us
To understand where to move next, sometimes it is worth looking back.
The team of the NGO “Foundation for Sustainable Change” has a number of initiatives behind it that have become important stages of our development even before the organization received its current name. These projects have become growth points that continue to inspire us to new solutions.
In 2021, the NGO team participated in a project on satellite monitoring of natural landfills in Ukrainian communities (https://inform.ikd.kiev.ua/2021/11/ldms_project/). This was a response to a real challenge — to combine digital technologies, local interaction and environmental action.
Among the main directions of the project:
- analysis of satellite images to detect illegal landfills;
- identification of environmentally problematic locations;
- cooperation with local authorities and activists to respond.
This experience was a revelation for us: technology is not a distant future, but a real tool for supporting communities today. It was then that we first saw how data can help make important environmental decisions.
Today we are opening a new direction – the development of a digital educational platform for students of agricultural universities.
Our goal is to create a space where young people can:
- model sustainable agricultural practices;
- work with open environmental data;
- research climate change;
- create their own innovative solutions at the intersection of agriculture, technology and ecology.
We believe that the path to a sustainable future begins with understanding. And modern environmental education is the key to this future.
We thank everyone who has been part of our journey and invite partners, mentors, teachers, students and everyone who shares our value of sustainable development to join us.

We are finalists of the Impact Check program!
We have completed the Impact Check organizational capacity building training: thank you for your trust and development!
The NGO “Foundation for Sustainable Changes” has successfully completed all three stages of the Impact Check educational grant program, which was aimed at strengthening the organizational capacity of public initiatives throughout Ukraine.
The first stage is online training, in which 337 organizations participated.
The second stage is a three-day offline intensive in Dnipro for 30 selected participants. It was there that we received a grant to strengthen our organizational capacity.
The third stage is mentoring support, which was completed by only 10 organizations, including us.
From digital monitoring to youth work: the next stage of our development
After the experience of satellite monitoring of natural landfills, the team of the NGO “Foundation for Sustainable Changes” is expanding its focus and working on educational digital solutions for students of agricultural universities.
A new priority for the “Foundation for Sustainable Changes” is the creation of a digital learning platform for students of agricultural universities.
What will this platform be like?
This is an online space where students will be able to:
- take thematic modules on carbon agriculture, sustainable agricultural practices and climate solutions;
- work with open geodata, satellite images and analytical maps;
- model the impact of agricultural technologies on soil carbon accumulation;
- receive feedback from mentors and experts;
- test their solutions in the format of interactive simulations.
The platform will have both educational and practical functions so that students can not only gain knowledge, but also apply it in real or simulated cases. It will be integrated with the educational process and open to partnership initiatives with universities, teachers and environmental organizations.
We are convinced: a new generation of agricultural specialists will become the driver of the “green transformation” of Ukraine. And now is the time to lay a solid educational foundation for them.
We invite teachers, mentors, partner institutions and everyone who shares our values to cooperate.
Together we can create a platform for the future in the truest sense of the word 💚
Participation in the international round table: EU integration and challenges for the agricultural sector
On May 15, the team of the NGO “Foundation for Sustainable Change” joined the international roundtable on the topic “Integration into the EU and Challenges for the Ukrainian Agricultural Sector in the Conditions of the European Green Deal”. The event was organized by the National University of Life Resources and Environmental Management of Ukraine with the support of the European Union.
The event brought together over 100 participants, representatives of agribusiness, universities, government agencies and public organizations to discuss a common vision for the transformation of Ukrainian agriculture.
For our organization, participation in such events is an opportunity to:
- share experience in the field of climate solutions and sustainable agriculture;
- establish new partnerships between education, civil society and business;
- influence the formation of policies focused on an ecological future.
During the discussions, the following topical topics were raised:
- adaptation of Ukraine’s agricultural policy to the European Green Deal;
- the potential of carbon certificates as a financial instrument to support farmers;
- the role of education and public initiatives in the transition to sustainable agricultural production.
We are grateful to the organizers for the invitation and the opportunity to be part of this dialogue. We believe that only through the joint efforts of science, business, the public and the state will the transition to a sustainable future become a reality today.
Agreement on new rules for carbon credits under the auspices of the UN
The United Nations has adopted key standards for a new carbon credit system under the Paris Agreement — Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism (PACM). This system allows countries and businesses to generate high-quality credits for reducing emissions, contributing to the global fight against climate change.
Two main standards were approved as part of the agreed rules:
- Baseline standard — it requires setting an initial emissions level below “business as usual” (minus 10% at the start and minus 1% annually), which incentivizes a continuous increase in the ambition of projects.
- Standard for combating emission transfer (leakage) — it requires that projects stop the possible transfer of emissions to other regions and, in particular, that REDD+ initiatives be linked to the national strategic documents of host countries.
In addition, a decision was made on the equitable distribution of benefits for host countries, and training and support programs for such countries were introduced. Standardized approaches to retrofitting “kitchen” projects (e.g., stove retrofitting) in accordance with the latest technological data.
“This was an extremely important approach. We have finally adopted an innovative solution that ensures a consistent level of crediting on the path to carbon neutrality, through minimal reduction of crediting levels over time” — said Martin Geschen, Chairman of the PACM Supervisory Board.
These solutions pave the way for the launch of the first methodologies and project registration by the end of the year, and the system itself can become a powerful tool for strengthening climate ambition and attracting investments in emission reductions from 2026.

The Institute of Ecological Restoration and Development will be established in Ukraine
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the creation of the Institute of Ecological Restoration and Development of Ukraine, the first state institution that will systematically study environmental challenges associated with the post-war period.
The new institute is being formed by merging the State Ecological Academy of Postgraduate Education and Management and the Center for Advanced Training of Water Management Workers. This will allow preserving the scientific and pedagogical potential of both institutions, optimizing the personnel structure, and rationally using budget resources.
Working under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment, the institute will focus on studying the environmental consequences of the war and developing solutions for sustainable and environmentally responsible restoration of the country. The institution will conduct fundamental and applied scientific research, train scientific personnel and improve the skills of specialists in the field of ecology.
This decision is an important step towards implementing the provisions of the Ecological Treaty for Ukraine. Post-war reconstruction should be based on scientific approaches and ecological principles.
“The reconstruction of Ukraine should be not only rapid, but also environmentally responsible. The creation of the Institute of Ecological Restoration and Development is a strategic step that will allow for the systematic study of the consequences of the military impact on the environment and the search for effective solutions for its restoration. This institution will become a key scientific platform for the formation of environmental policy in the post-war period,” says Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk.

EU leads large-scale ocean protection: ratification of the International Waters Treaty
The European Union, together with six Member States – Cyprus, Finland, Hungary, Latvia, Portugal and Slovenia – officially ratified the High Seas Treatyon 28 May 2025. This UN-backed agreement lays the foundation for the conservation of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction – covering almost two-thirds of the world’s oceans.
With this step, the number of signatory countries has now reached 28, making it the largest simultaneous ratification of such a treaty. The EU calls on other participants to join as soon as possible in order to reach the required quota of 60 ratifications for entry into force – it is expected that this could happen as early as the summer.
The EU also announced the allocation of €40 million to support countries in the African, Caribbean and Pacific region to accelerate the implementation of the Treaty. The overall effort aims to create a network of protected areas to ensure that at least 30% of the oceans are protected by 2030.
“Today, the European Union is taking a historic step towards protecting the oceans and preserving the fragile balance of ecosystems,” said Costas Cadiz, Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans.
This agreement paves the way for the introduction of marine reserves in international waters, which significantly changes the approach to protecting the oceans and provides an effective mechanism for preserving the planet’s ecological wealth.
